The Big 8 Conference meet is Saturday at Middleton High School. Meet starts at 1pm. Parents you need to be there early. This meet sells out and if you want to get a seat or see Beloit swim get there 2hours early. I am not kidding.

Lady Tide Scares Sun Praire

The Lady Tide swam an outstanding meet Friday night in their last meet at home for the season. The Tide gave the their parents an great Parents Night. Final Score SP 91 Beloit 79. The Tide was again led by Margo Grover and Em Busam. Margo 1st in the 50 Free and Busam 1st in the 200 free. The 400 Free Relay of Grover, Busam, Madeline Franklin and Great finish by Gabby DeKok won the relay in a season best 4:09.

There were many outstanding swims. Franklin 200 Free, Maggie Ezdon 100 Back, DeKok 100 Breast, Hannah Sweet 100 Free, Nikki Masterson 100 Back, Jennette Coppernoll 50 Free, Cherrelle Phon 100 Fly.

The Lady Tide's next meet is Saturday October 31st at Middleton for the Big 8 Conference Meet. Parents get there real early. This meet sells out fast. You need to be there 2 - 3 hours early!

Being a Champion

WANT TO GO AS FAR AS POSSIBLE AS AN ATHLETE? THEN SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIKE-MINDED, GO-FOR-IT PEOPLE

Do you really want to become a champion? Do you reallywant to take your athletic talents as far as humanly possible? If so, then you want to systematically surround yourself with highly motivated, high achieving, supportive individuals. You want coaches around you who believe in you and your dreams. You want practice partners who are like-minded and high achieving, and who are willing to push themselves and you to get as good as possible.

You do NOT want people on "your team" who are negative, have a poor work ethic and are directly threatened by your success. These people, be they coaches or other athletes are "dream stealers." Because of their own insecurities, negativity and immaturity, they will go out of their way to sabotage your quest. Pursuing excellence and becoming a champion is hard enough as it is without having to deal with these energy drains.

It's like running a race with a team. Do you want your teammates physically hanging onto your back and legs, weighing you down and tugging you backwards? Would you like them filling your head full of "you can't,""you'll never," "This is just too hard" and "why bother?" Or do you want your practice partners and teammates physically pushing you forward from behind while they inspire and motivate you, "Come on! You CAN do this! You're a winner!!!! "Keep going!" "I know you CAN!"? The answer is obvious!A winning team is made up of like-minded individuals who are committed to the pursuit of excellence and who understand that getting as good as possible and going all the way is far easier when everyone works together and has similar goals. Real champions understand that their opponent's success and improvement is a really good, rather than very bad thing for them! They understand that the competition's improvement will challenge and push them to get better. Champions understand that being around more talented, better skilled individuals will illuminate the path towards their dreams, helping them clearly see the direction that they must go in and what is actually possible at the end of that path.

So go out and try to find friends who are actually friends in that they support your dreams and believe in your ability to get there. Find training partners who truly challenge you and are invested in pushing you and them as much as possible so that you might both improve. Find coaches who are inspirational, demanding and positive, who also believe in you and all that you can become. IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A CHAMPION, THEN YOU MUST SURROUND YOURSELF WITH CHAMPIONS!!!!!!

Apologies for the delay in posting after my lecture last week at UIC - the Chicago Marathon came and went, and since then, travels have taken too much time to post properly.

However, what I've done below is post segments of that talk, which was titled"Limits to exercise performance: World records, fatigue and unphysiological performances". Unfortunately, Jonathan was a little off at an angle, but hopefully the video is clear enough and the sound good enough to make out the argument. Obviously, you're watching a part of a presentation slightly out of context, but hopefully it gives you the basic idea. This is a topic that has been covered a few times on the site - in fact, there's a whole series on Fatigue for those who are interested.

To summarize, your ability to regulate pace (which is something I'll bet you've never even think about) is vastly more complex than you may realize. Even the most basic decision of how fast to start a 5km versus a 10km race is the result of innumerable calculations, which take into account previous experience, training, motivation, environment (internal and external) and physiological changes during exercise.

It really is a remarkable system, and one which we believe is primarily regulated by the perception of effort. This is something you probably also haven't thought about much, but the way you perceive exercise is in fact so enormously complex that science is many years away from understanding it.

There is debate in science about whether your perception and the regulation of the pace is done consciously or sub-consciously, and that's where the debate seems "stuck" (or centered) right now. I suspect that, as with most things, it will turn out to be a combination, for conscious regulation is obvious (you choose to slow down), but so is unconscious regulation - you don't have to think about starting pace, and you also slow down 'involuntarily' during exercise, even though your perception of effort is not necessarily raised (very important point this).

To explain, the physiological inputs before and during exercise result in a conscious perception of effort, which is then interpreted based on the expected duration and the "template RPE", which is a construct representing what would be considered an acceptable rise in RPE. This interpretation of RPE underscores why exercise intensity changes dynamically during exercise. It explains how motivation impacts on performance, and it accounts for the effects of changing conditions on performance. This is why you speed up at the end of a race, even though your body temperature may be close to limiting, whereas you slow down in the middle, when you are not hot.

The idea that your physiology 'controls' pacing is flawed, because it ignores the importance of context - not all physiological inputs are interpreted equally!

SUCCESS IS JUST BEYOND THE SPLATT!!!!

A young student meets a bearded Guru on the road one day and he stops him and asks, " Kind scholar.....can you please tell me, which is the way to success? The old sage says nothing and instead simply points off in a south-west direction.

The young man, thanks the Guru profusely and, with thoughts of accomplishment and riches in his head, he quickly and excitedly heads off in the pointed direction. Five minutes pass and suddenly there is a loud SPLATT!!!! Another several minutes go by and the young man finally staggers back. His clothes are disheveled, his hair is a mess and he looks shell shocked. Once more he addresses the old man, "Wise man, can you PLEASE tell me, which way to success?

Again the Guru says nothing but simply points off in that very same southwesterly direction. And again the young man heads off, if not a bit more cautiously this time, to find his fame and riches.

10 minutes pass and there is a ground-shaking and deafeningSPLATT!!!!!!! Smoke rises up in the distance, roosting birds wildly scatter. Many minutes pass before a solitary figure can be seen crawling back along the road towards the Guru. As he gets closer, the Sage recognizes that it's the young man. However, the poor student is badly bruised and bloodied. His clothes are tattered and torn and he looks like he's been through a fierce battle but gotten the worst of it.

Now, however, the young man's nerves and temper are completely frayed. He screams at the wise man, "Old man. I politely asked you which way to success and both times you spoke not at all but simply pointed. Both times I followed your silly directions and both times all I got was SPLATTED! Enough with the silent finger pointing! Tell me in words sir! Which way to success?"

The Guru patiently looks at the beaten up student, smiles and then quietly says as he points in that same southwesterly direction. "SUCCESS IS THAT WAY YOUNG MAN, JUST BEYOND THE SPLATTS!"

Moral of the story: Want success? Just keep following the SPLATTS! No one accomplishes anything of value and meaning without experiencing many powerful SPLATTS!

Lady Tide has GREAT Swims

Friday night the Lady Tide had a Great meet vs. Middleton. Margo Grover and Em Busan finished 1,2 in the 200 Freestyle. Margo also BROKE the minute barrier in the 100 free with a 59.53. Saturday the Tide swam at the Craig Relays. The ladies continued to drop great time. The Rocket Relay (8x50 free) finished 3rd and in the medals. The team was Em Busan, Haligh Thomas, Becka Wentworth, Cherelle Phon, Gabby DeKok, Jennette Coppernoll, Madeline Franklin, Margo Grover.
Notable splits; Grover Split a 26.5, Phon 28.00, Madeline 28.4, Gabby 28.5.
